Managing the Risk of Catastrophes: Protecting Critical Infrastructure in Urban Areas

Overview
This conference brings together experts on risk analysis and local policymakers to develop a framework for decision making on the protection of infrastructure in the wake of disasters. The damage and disruption caused by Superstorm Sandy on the communications, power, and transportation infrastructure in many parts of the New York City region highlighted the need to examine ways to limit the adverse effects of extreme events on critical infrastructure in urban areas. Conference participants include representatives of state and local governments and various utilities as well as academics who will provide perspective on the issues. The conference is discussion-oriented, and the anticipated outcome is an outline of the key elements of an effective public policy strategy to address the potential infrastructure losses attributable to catastrophic events. Presentations will be brief to allow ample time for discussion.
