Fourth Annual International Roles of the U.S. Dollar Conference

CALL FOR PAPERS
September 25, 2025
The Federal Reserve Board and the Federal Reserve Bank of New York are jointly organizing the fourth conference on the International Roles of the U.S. Dollar, to be held on September 25 and 26, 2025, at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York. The U.S. dollar plays a preeminent role in the global economy because of its use in international funding, investment, payment and trade transactions, and as a reserve currency. This conference garners the insights of researchers, policymakers, and market experts on the evolving roles of the U.S. dollar in the global economy, the consequences of these roles for the Federal Reserve’s mandates, and the prospects for these roles.

The conference will feature a keynote address by Arvind Krishnamurthy of Stanford Business School, a panel discussion, and research paper presentations with discussants. The organizers welcome theoretical and empirical paper submissions that address the drivers, consequences, and policy implications of the international roles of the dollar, with an emphasis on the following areas:.

  • The international roles of the U.S. dollar in relation to developments in international trade and global investment.
  • Consequences for the U.S. dollar and the functioning of global financial markets of policies and frameworks impacting global financial transactions, cross-border payment systems, and capital flows.
  • The roles of foreign-exchange derivatives, funding markets, investment mandates, and the liquidity of U.S. financial assets for global asset allocations.
  • The status of the dollar as the dominant reserve currency and the recent performance of cryptocurrencies and gold as stores of values.
