Thursday, June 9, 2011
Overview
The OPEN resource network, partnered with the AALMA and MOSAIC resource networks, will host a special screening of the award-winning documentary "Brother Outsider: The Life of Bayard Rustin." Following the screening, the producer and director of the documentary, Bennett Singer, along with Bayard Rustin's partner, Walter Naegle, will discuss the documentary and Mr. Rustin's role in the civil rights movement.

The documentary presents a rich biographical portrait of Bayard Rustin, a visionary activist, strategist and organizer who has been called the "unknown hero" of the civil rights movement. Following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival, the film was broadcast nationally on PBS, shown at the United Nations and Kennedy Center. Further, the documentary has won more than 25 international awards and honors, including eight Best Documentary prizes and seven Audience Favorite awards at film festivals, along with the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Documentary and an NAACP Image Award.
