NEW YORK — On Thursday, May 25, at 11AM EDT, the Federal Reserve Bank of New York will release a two-part research series on its Liberty Street Economics blog exploring economic differences for military service veterans.
The new series builds on the recurring Liberty Street Economics research series about Economic Inequality, which highlights differences in economic outcomes and policy impacts by race, gender, age, geography, income, education, and other factors.
Veterans are an understudied group that forms an important part of the fabric of American society and constitutes a significant segment of the population. This new series will investigate how the outcomes of veteran men differ from those of comparable men who did not serve in the military in terms of educational attainment, health, and housing, leveraging the 2019 five-year American Community Survey. The blog authors will then consider veterans’ earnings and labor market outcomes and compare it with those of comparable men who did not serve in the military.
The latest series will feature the following posts:
“Do Veterans Face Disparities in Education, Health, and Housing?” investigates how the outcomes of veteran men–in educational attainment, health, and housing–differ from those of comparable men who did not serve in the military.
“Do Veterans Face Disparities in the Labor Market—And What Accounts for Them?” considers veterans’ earnings and labor market outcomes.
In conjunction with this Liberty Street Economics series, the New York Fed will launch the Equitable Growth Indicators (EGIs), a new research product that will measure disparities across four economic outcomes—inflation, real and nominal earnings, employment, and real and nominal consumer spending. The product will be updated monthly. Outcomes will be available for demographic, economic, and geographic groups including race/ethnicity, age, veteran status, education and income, as well as urban/rural status, U.S. census regions, majority-minority areas and low-income areas.
